This work was born after a reflection about motivation and its diverse agents. We wanted to go from a uniquely psychological vision of motivation towards the examination of teaching instruments such as the teacher s manual and its structure, its material shape But coming from the principle that a manual or a method mostly universal can t by itself influence a specific student, in a specific classroom of a specific country we ask ourselves how, in fact, the teacher uses these instruments to organize a course and during such motivate the students on their learning. To answer these questions we use as observation object the classes of French as a second language (FSL) of a Brazilian Language Center.
