Ce travail propose une analyse sur l'alcoolisation à partir des modulations d'usage d'une population indigène au Nordeste du Brésil. A partir du stéréotype de l'Indien buveur, la recherche explore les rituels et les drames d'alcoolisation dans une perspective interactionniste et herméneutique. La question de l'ethnicité est prise comme toile de fond pour comprendre les significations construites autour des pratiques et des croyances d'alcoolisation. Parallèlement, l'interprétation de l'alcoolisation illumine les interstices culturels de la construction ethnique. La thèse examine aussi la place des Indiens dans l'imaginaire religieux et magique, ainsi que son association avec les plantes et les boissons. Une vaste trame ethnographique est tissée pour rendre compte des rituels indigènes de consommation de la boisson traditionnelle. Sa préparation, les élaborations symboliques autour de ses propriétés et des autres boissons alcoolisées forment aussi le cadre de cette trame. La contextualisation des drames d'alcoolisation est réalisée à travers l'analyse de l'ordre social et politique local. Ces drames sont décrits et interprétés en articulant l'alcoolisation et la condition d'indigène. L'objectif est de démontrer que l'usage de substances de modification de conscience est toujours un processus et une expérience de construction de soi et du monde.

This thesis proposes to analyze alcoholic intoxication taking as a basis the use patterns of an Indian group from Northeastern Brazil. Starting from the stereotypes around the Indian drunkard, the research explores the rituals and the dramas of intoxication, adopting interactionist and hermeneutic perspectives. The question of ethnicity serves as a background to the understanding of the meanings constructed around the practices and beliefs involving intoxication. At the same time, the interpretation of drunkenness sheds light on the cultural interstices of the ethnic construction . The thesis also examines the place of Indians in the religious and magical imagination, as well as their association with plants and drinks. A vast ethnographic web is woven in order to account for Indian rituals around the consumption of the traditional drink. The preparing, and the symbolic elaborations around its properties and those of other alcoholic drinks are also part of this picture. The dramas of intoxication are put into context through an analysis of the social order and of local politics. These dramas are described and interpreted by articulating alcoholic intoxication and the Indian condition . The object is to show that the use of consciousness altering substances is always a process and an experience of constructing the self and the world.
