Accompanying a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, de Kooning : A restrospective tracks Willem de Kooning's developement over a full seven decades, beginning with his first surviving painting, made when he was twelve, and ending with his spare, extraordinarily refined canvases of the 1980s. The plates between show nearly 200 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, while over 500 illustrations reproduce some hundreds more ot fhe artist's works and a selection of art relevant to hom, ranging from 4.000 -year-old Greek statuary to the work of his peers. The book's chapters, and its introductory essay by John Elderfied, MoMA's Cheife Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture, explore the startling complexities of de Kooning's practice, while an illustrated chronology tells the story of his life. In both its writing ant its lavish colour images, this volume is the most complete account of de Koonin's artistic career to date.
